3 Beyond modalism

Those who are persuaded by the arguments against any form of modalism about essence need to provide an alternative account. Even if one takes essence to be a primitive notion, one can still recognize the value of providing further elucidation. In this section, we will consider first various ways in which essence has been taken to be related to the real definition of a thing. We will further examine a distinction made by Fine, between constitutive essence and consequential essence. Finally, we will consider the attempt to give an account of necessity in terms of essence (the opposite of the modalist’s attempt to give an account of essence in terms of necessity).
